Australian Immigration Latest Updates – August 2026

Australia’s migration landscape continues to evolve, with several important developments for skilled migrants, families, students and temporary visa holders.

🔹 2026–27 Migration Program: Australia’s Permanent Migration Program has been set at 185,000 places, with approximately 70% allocated to the Skilled stream and 30% to the Family stream.

🔹 New Skilled Visa Processing Priorities: Ministerial Direction 119, effective from 25 July 2026, now determines processing priorities for certain skilled nomination and visa applications.

🔹 Tasmania Skilled Migration: Tasmania will open its 2026–27 Skilled Migration State Nomination Program to new ROIs from 17 August 2026. Tasmania has received 2,050 nomination places for the program year, with changes also applying to priority attributes.

🔹 Subclass 189 Invitations: Home Affairs advises that the next Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) invitation round is expected by 30 September 2026.

🔹 Family Migration: The 2026–27 Family stream has a planning level of 52,460 places, including an estimated 41,500 Partner visas and 3,500 Child visas.

🔹 Partner Visa Priority: Current processing arrangements give the highest priority to certain Partner visa applications made while the primary applicant is in Australia and where the visa can be granted onshore.

🔹 Student Visa Costs: Student visa application charges increased from 1 July 2026, making careful study and visa planning even more important.

🔹 Working Holiday Update: Australia and Indonesia are moving the Indonesian Work and Holiday program to a ballot system, expected to open later in 2026.
